Accessibility
Updated 1 September 2026
We want this site to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion.
What we aim for
We build towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, at level AA. That is the standard we hold new work to.
We have not yet had the site audited by an independent third party. When we do, we will publish the result here rather than claim a level we have not tested.
What we have built for
- Every page can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone.
- Headings run in order so a screen reader can navigate the structure of a page.
- Images that carry meaning have text alternatives.
- Text and background colours are chosen to hold contrast.
- Text reflows without a horizontal scrollbar down to a narrow screen.
- Form fields carry visible labels, not placeholder text alone.
Where we know we fall short
Some older articles in the Journal carry images without text alternatives, and a few carry text that is part of the image rather than real text. We are replacing these.
